Queensland’s flu season usually ramps up in autumn and peaks through winter. Protection takes about two to three weeks to build after your jab, so April is a smart time to vaccinate. If you like to be organised, think of it as part of your autumn health reset.
At The Pines Medical Practice in Elanora, our nurses and GPs run dedicated clinics for influenza vaccination each year. This guide answers who can get a government-funded vaccine, when stock usually arrives, how to book at The Pines, and what to expect on the day. We also cover special groups, co-administering with other vaccines, side effects and after-care, and typical fees at our mixed-billing practice.
Who qualifies for a free flu vaccine in QLD
In Queensland, the National Immunisation Program (NIP) funds flu vaccines for people at higher risk of complications. You are typically eligible if you are:
- Children aged 6 months to under 5 years
- Adults aged 65 years and over (given an enhanced vaccine)
- Pregnant at any stage of pregnancy
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 6 months and older
- People aged 6 months and older with certain medical conditions that increase flu risk (for example, chronic heart, lung, neurological or liver disease, severe asthma, diabetes, immunocompromise)
Queensland Health has occasionally run time-limited programs offering free flu shots to broader age groups. These offers vary from year to year. Check current eligibility when you book, as public programs can change.
Are flu shots still free in QLD? Yes, for the NIP groups listed above. If you are not eligible under the NIP and there is no state program running, you can still get a private flu vaccine at our clinic.
The best time to get a flu shot in QLD
For most people, April or May is ideal. Immunity develops within two to three weeks, then gradually tapers across the season. Vaccinating in April helps you carry protection into the peak winter months. If you miss April, book as soon as you can. Late is still better than not at all, particularly if you are in a higher-risk group.
When 2026 flu vaccines are likely to be available
Annual flu vaccine stock usually reaches general practices in March or early April, once TGA-approved formulations are released for Australia. At The Pines, we open pre-registration and waitlists, then contact patients as soon as stock is on site and clinics are confirmed. For 2026, plan to register interest in late February or early March, and book your appointment from March or April once we announce dates. Exact availability can vary each year based on supply and approval timelines.
Booking at The Pines: nurse clinics vs GP consults
Most patients can book into our nurse-led flu clinics. These are efficient, friendly sessions run in our treatment room with GP oversight. If you have complex medical questions, a history of severe allergy, or you need review of medications or chronic conditions at the same time, book a GP consultation instead. Our reception can guide you to the right appointment type when you call.
Prefer to book online? You can book a doctor appointment on the Gold Coast through our website and select a flu clinic session when available. If you need other preventative care as well, explore our dedicated vaccination clinic service on the Gold Coast to see how nurse appointments work within our team-based model.
What to expect on the day
Arrive a few minutes early with your Medicare card and wear a short-sleeved top. Our nurse will confirm your details, check eligibility for funded vaccine if applicable, and ask about allergies or past reactions. The vaccine is given into the upper arm and takes seconds.
After your jab, you will be asked to wait briefly in the clinic. Minor side effects are common, such as a sore arm, low-grade fever, tiredness or muscle aches over the next day or two. Paracetamol or ibuprofen can help, if appropriate for you. Serious reactions are rare. If you feel unwell, develop breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or a widespread rash, seek urgent medical care.
Tip for children: bring a comfort toy, and plan a calm activity after the appointment. Our nurses are experienced with little arms and anxious teens.
Fees, rebates and how billing works at our practice
We are a mixed-billing clinic. Government-funded flu vaccines are supplied at no cost to eligible patients under the NIP. There may still be a fee for the consultation or nurse appointment, with Medicare rebates applied where eligible. For private vaccines, you will pay for the vaccine plus the appointment fee. Each GP sets their own fees, and our team can provide current pricing when you book.
If you hold a concession or pension card, or you are booking for a child, ask reception about reduced fees that may apply for consultations. We process your Medicare rebate at payment to make things easier.
Guidance for special groups
Pregnancy: The flu vaccine is recommended at any stage of pregnancy and protects both mother and baby. It can be safely given with whooping cough (dTpa) if timing aligns. If you are planning travel during pregnancy, ask our GPs to coordinate your antenatal and travel needs.
Children: From 6 months to under 5 years, the NIP funds flu vaccination. Children 6 months to under 9 years receiving their first-ever flu vaccine may need two doses, four weeks apart. Our nurses can help you schedule both.
Chronic disease: If you have asthma, COPD, diabetes, heart disease, or other long-term conditions, book early in the season and consider pairing your appointment with a review of your care plan. Our team provides chronic disease management plans on the Gold Coast if you need structured support and allied health coordination.
Can you have the flu vaccine with other vaccines?
Yes, influenza vaccines can be given on the same day as most other vaccines, including COVID-19 boosters. If you are due for travel vaccines, it is generally safe to co-administer, but timing can be adjusted based on your itinerary and vaccine type. Our travel clinic on the Gold Coast can plan your schedule, including any Yellow Fever, Hepatitis or Q fever needs, which differ from seasonal influenza and target travel-specific risks.
Myths we hear every year
The flu shot gives you the flu: It does not. The inactivated vaccine cannot cause influenza. I had it last year, so I am covered: Strains change and protection fades. Annual vaccination is recommended for anyone 6 months and older. I am healthy, so I do not need it: Even healthy adults can get very unwell and can pass flu to infants, older family members and colleagues.
