June is a natural pause point. The summer rush has passed, winter viruses are circulating, and many people feel their energy dip. It is the perfect moment to check in on your health and reset any habits that have slipped.
At The Pines Medical Practice in Elanora, we offer a structured mid-year GP health check that focuses on early detection, winter readiness and practical next steps. Our AGPAL-accredited clinic is located inside The Pines Shopping Centre with easy parking and nearby pathology, so getting to the doctor is straightforward even on a busy day.
Whether you are a parent juggling school runs, a tradie on the tools, over 40, or have a family history of heart disease or diabetes, a mid-year check can help you stay ahead of problems and feel confident about the months ahead.
What a mid-year GP health check includes
A comprehensive check is tailored to your age, history and goals. Your GP will typically cover:
- Blood pressure and pulse, height, weight and BMI
- Medication and allergy review, including supplements
- Mental health screening and stress or sleep check-in
- Cardiovascular and diabetes risk assessment
- Vaccination status review with winter flu planning
- Skin cancer risk review and whether a skin check is due
Depending on your needs, we may add cervical screening, a breast check, prostate health discussions, asthma or COPD action plan review, and travel health advice. If further investigation is indicated, we can arrange pathology, ECGs, imaging or referrals, and set a realistic follow-up plan.
Standard consult, annual health assessment or nurse-led review
Choosing the right appointment helps you get the most from your visit.
- Standard GP consultation: Usually 15 minutes. Ideal for 1 to 2 focused issues or simple follow-up. If you have a checklist of preventive items, please book a long appointment.
- Annual health assessment: Structured and age or eligibility based. For example, patients aged 75 and over living at home can access a government-funded, in-home assessment that is bulk-billed. Assessments include a comprehensive review of vitals, medications, function and supports, with GP follow-up.
- Targeted nurse-led reviews: Practical, efficient reviews for chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes or respiratory illness, delivered by our practice nurses with GP oversight. These are useful for six-monthly diabetes reviews, asthma or COPD action plans and care plan updates.
Not sure which to book? Call reception and mention you want a mid-year health check. We will guide you to the right option and time length.
Who benefits most from a mid-year check
- Busy parents: Quick review of your own health while we confirm children’s immunisations and winter planning.
- Tradies and physically active workers: Blood pressure and musculoskeletal concerns can creep up. A check helps you stay safe at work.
- Over 40s: Cardiovascular and diabetes risk start to shift. Mid-year is a good time to review numbers, skin risk and mental health.
- Anyone with a family history of heart disease or diabetes: Early screening helps you modify risk and stay on track.
If you have noticed new or changing skin spots after summer, ask about a dedicated skin check appointment.
Winter readiness and local priorities
June to August is peak respiratory season. Your GP can help you decide the best timing for a flu vaccine, review your asthma or COPD plan and confirm whether any other immunisations are due. If you are travelling later in the year, we can plan travel vaccinations and documents ahead of time.
Sun exposure earlier in the year can also reveal new lesions. If you are due or have a concern, book a focused visit for a head-to-toe skin review with lesion photography where appropriate. Fees, rebates and typical costs
The Pines Medical Practice operates a mixed-billing model and each doctor sets their own fees. As a guide:
- Standard consultation: typically $90
- Long consultation: typically $130
Concession pricing is available for eligible card holders and children under 16, and aged pensioners over 65 may be bulk-billed for Medicare-eligible consultations. Your Medicare rebate is processed at payment via integrated EFTPOS. If you need a longer appointment for multiple preventive items, please select a long consult when booking.
Most blood tests are billed by the pathology provider. Many attract a Medicare rebate. If a private fee applies, the provider will tell you before testing. Your GP will only order tests that are clinically indicated and will explain any costs.
Telephone consultations may attract a fee, and Medicare rebates can apply when criteria are met.
What to bring and how to prepare
Bring your Medicare card and any concession or pension cards. A current medication and supplement list is very helpful. If you have recent test results or specialist letters, bring those too. Wear clothing that allows easy blood pressure measurement and, if a skin review is planned, easy access to areas you want checked. If fasting bloods are needed, we will give clear instructions ahead of time.
How to book
You can book online anytime or phone reception during business hours on (07) 5598 1300. If you have several concerns or want a comprehensive mid-year check, choose a long appointment so your GP has enough time for a thorough review and planning.

Age-based screening, cervical screening, breast checks or prostate discussions may be added.
