Winter is coming on the Gold Coast, which makes mid-year a smart time to tune up your health. A short, focused visit now can catch risks early, refresh your vaccinations and keep you on track for the rest of the year.
At The Pines Medical Practice in Elanora, we tailor checks to your age, personal risk and goals. Below, you will find what a GP “full health check” usually involves, what fits into a standard versus a long consultation, when we arrange extra tests, how fees and rebates work, and a simple prep list to make your appointment smooth.
If you are due for a skin review after summer, a flu vaccine before winter or a conversation about heart or diabetes risk, this guide will help you book with confidence.
What we mean by a “full health check”
A full GP health check is a structured consultation that focuses on prevention and early detection. At The Pines Medical Practice, your GP and our practice nurse work as a team. We cover your current concerns, then move through key screening steps that fit your age and history.
Typical core components include:
- Blood pressure and pulse, height, weight and BMI
- Medication and allergy review, including over-the-counter and supplements
- Cardiovascular risk review, based on history, blood pressure, smoking status and, if available, cholesterol results
- Diabetes risk assessment, with blood tests arranged if indicated
- Mental health screening, sleep and stress check-in
- Skin cancer risk discussion and a focused or full skin check when needed
- Vaccination status check, with flu and COVID-19 boosters timed for winter
Depending on your needs, we can add cervical screening, breast checks, prostate discussions, sexual health testing, asthma or COPD plan reviews, and travel health advice. If an issue needs more time or tests, we will plan a follow-up.
Standard vs long consultations: what fits where
- Standard consultation (about 15 minutes): Best for one to two priorities. For example, blood pressure check, medication review and a plan for blood tests; or a flu vaccine and diabetes risk screen.
- Long consultation: Allows a broader preventive review, more than two issues, or a full skin check plus planning. Long appointments are also helpful if you need forms completed or have a complex history.
If we identify items that need further investigation, we may:
- Arrange pathology tests (such as fasting lipids, glucose or HbA1c)
- Organise an ECG if you have symptoms or elevated cardiovascular risk
- Refer for imaging or to allied health as appropriate
- Book a nurse-led review for chronic disease planning or vaccinations

Skin checks: quick, thorough and local
Queenslanders see a lot of sun. If you are due, book a comprehensive skin review with lesion photography as needed. Our GPs assess and treat many lesions onsite, and we arrange referrals for complex cases. Learn more about our service at our skin cancer checks page to book a skin check on the Gold Coast.
Fees, Medicare rebates and pathology billing
The Pines Medical Practice is a mixed-billing clinic. Each doctor sets their own fees, and Medicare rebates apply where eligible. Typical fees are:
- Standard consultation: $90.00
- Long consultation: $130.00
Concession and child fees apply as listed at reception. Aged pensioners may be bulk-billed for Medicare-eligible consultations. Your Medicare rebate is processed at payment via integrated EFTPOS. Telephone consultations may attract a fee, with rebates where criteria are met.
Pathology:
- Most routine blood tests are billed directly by the pathology provider. If a private fee applies, the provider will advise you. If fasting is required, we will let you know how long to fast and when to attend.
Government-funded assessments:
- Eligible patients aged 75 and over who live at home can access a bulk-billed annual health assessment. Our practice nurse completes the assessment and coordinates GP follow-up.
If you are experiencing financial difficulty, please speak with our reception team before your appointment so we can discuss options.
Simple prep list for your mid-year check
Bring:
- Medicare and concession or pension cards
- A list of your medications and doses, plus supplements
- Recent test results or specialist letters
- Home readings such as blood pressure or glucose logs if you have them
- Clothing that allows easy blood pressure measurement and, if planned, a skin review
If you are having fasting bloods, follow the instructions provided and drink water as usual unless advised otherwise.
